Finding the Right Travel Trailer For Your Needs

Campers, trailers, RVs – they all come in a variety of different shapes, sizes and styles. Choosing the right one for you and your families vacation needs comes down to exploring the three different camper types on the market today.

They fall into motor homes, fifth wheel campers, and travel trailers, each with their own appeal and conveniences. The travel trailer is still today the most popular of the three options.

Travel trailers include pop up campers, teardrop camping trailers, folding campers, trailer tents, mini travel trailers, very small camping trailers and trailer tents. The small travel trailers are no more than 18’ long, light weight and very fuel efficient when towed.

They can be towed by just about any vehicle – from small car to truck – and are perfect for two but no more than three people. With a small kitchen, combined living room and dining room area, small toilet and shower, the small travel trailer is perfect for a quiet weekend getaway and longer vacation trip.

When you sit down to decide the perfect family home on wheels, consider buying new or used, what features are important, whether or not there is enough room in the camper for everyone, how it is laid out, and what you will need to supplement if you are trying to keep your budget small. Never go above your budget no matter how nice the models you look at are.

Upgrading your small travel trailer down the road is always something you can do later. If you can find a lightly used small travel trailer that’s within your budget, this is another option you have to purchasing brand new.

When you plan your travel trailer budget, don’t forget to include things like registration and inspection fees, liability insurance, and storage costs if you are not keeping it on your property. Practice hitching and unhitching your trailer and be familiar with the owner’s manual so that you can be ready to make repairs if needed. Also make sure you know how to prep a lightweight travel trailer for the summer and winter.

Take some local trips with your travel trailer first to get the hang of camping with it and soon you’ll be an expert at vacation and weekend getaways.
