Teardrop Camper Trailers

Teardrop camper trailers have been around since 1936 and they are still one of the most popular small travel trailers enjoyed by camping and RV enthusiasts today.

These trailers are usually one room that holds a kitchen, combination living area and dining area, and a small sleeping area. Teardrop trailers are designed to accommodate two people and have been used in the past as people’s homes because they were so cost-efficient. Today, there are gatherings all over the United States just for people who own and love their teardrop rv.

No one knows for sure whether the first teardrop camping trailer was commercially manufactured or built by hand. They are lightweight trailers that are usually no more than 10’ long and capable of being hauled by a car.

By the early 1950s, teardrop trailers were the perfect solution to a weekend getaway with the family. Many people stocked it with canned and dried goods and camping gear for the kids and off they went into the wild blue yonder. The trailer was parked and the family was free to go exploring as soon as they arrived.

Most of the teardrop models on the market today are based on the most popular units from the 1940s through 1950s. The Wee-Kender, manufactured in Canada, is a very popular model that claims to ‘have the luxury of an RV’. It sleeps 2 comfortably with a 4” foam mattress pad, has 1-1/2” Styrofoam insulation, and can be towed by just about any vehicle on the road today.

Its dry weight is only 900 pounds and it is only 11’10” long, 72” high on the outside, and 68” wide. With 14” wheels, it has a cargo capacity of 1,000 pounds. That’s a lot of dry goods and canned food.

If you are interested in a teardrop camper trailer and enjoy building things, there are places online where you can purchase patterns complete with materials list that will allow you to make your own mini home on wheels. These small travel trailers are perfect for the weekend away from the hustle and bustle of the work week, and a teardrop trailer made by your own hands will be even more special.
